Curious about scoring Qwirkle? Follow along with an open-hand, three player game to see how it works.
How Scoring Works in Qwirkle
Let’s take a look at how scoring might work in a game of Qwirkle. Let’s play a game, and see how the points add up. There are three players in this game and unlike a real game of Qwirkle, we can see all of their tiles so we can understand their choices.
If you are new to the game, read about the Rules of Qwirkle first.
Scoring Qwirkle: Round #1
This round begins with Player One because they had three tiles they could play together. The other two players could only play two tiles. Since Player One played 3 tiles, they earned three points.
Player Two follows by playing two tiles, and scoring three points, since they completed a line of three with their move. Player Three scores a handy 6 points with two tiles by playing them next to two other tiles.
Scoring Qwirkle: Round #2
There are so many more options for playing after the first round! The board has started to open up. That means more choices, and more strategies! See more ideas for building points in the Rules of Qwirkle here.
Player One begins with two tiles to make a line for four points, plus two points for a second line of purple tiles. That brings their score for this round to 6, added to their 3 points, and they have 9 points.
Player Two sores 5 points with one tile! By placing it in a corner, this one tile can complete two lines. Added to their 3 points, they now have a score of 8. Player Three uses the same technique Player Two did, and scores 6 points. Added to their earlier 6, they now have a total of 12 points for an early lead.
Scoring Qwirkle: Round #3
Scoring and the lead can change quickly, as we see in this round.
Player One begins with a strategic play of two tiles, making 7 points. With their 9 earlier points, Player one now has a score of 16. Unfortunately for Player One, Player two follows with a Qwirkle, thereby scoring 12 points. Player Two now has a score of 20 and the lead.
Player Three scores a neat 4 points with two tiles at the end of another line. They end the round with 16 points.
How does the game end?
When there are no more tiles in the bag, and the first player has played their last tiles, the game ends. The player who went out gets 6 points, and the player with the most points wins. Congrats!
